9 bedtime essentials a sleep doctor uses to wind down

Wouldn’t it be nice if sleeping were as easy as turning off the lights and calling it a night? Unfortunately, your brain doesn’t always get that “bedtime now” memo, which is why Dr. Saema Tahir, a board-certified sleep medicine physician and pulmonologist, relies on several sleep essentials paired with a consistent nighttime routine to help her wind down, quiet the mental tabs in her mind, and wake up feeling fresh for the next day.

Dr. Saema Tahir, a board-certified sleep medicine physician and board-certified pulmonologist, knows well how the unstructured hours between dinner and bedtime can turn into a get-it-done time where the focus is on productivity and life admin instead of preparing for rest and sleep.

“We all know that at the end of the day, you have some hours, and you can easily do more during those hours,” she says. “But I believe that that's why we're not getting to sleep correctly: because now we're on overdrive.”

That’s why her own nighttime routine has boundaries by design.

“My nighttime routine is so strict,” she says. “I like my bedroom to be a sanctuary. I want it quiet. I want it cool. I want it to be comfortable. And I need it to really wind me down at the end of the day. So I use a certain regimen when I’m at home.”
