Poet Emily Hyland’s 2 writing essentials that help her get into a creative headspace

Poet and author Emily Hyland keeps her writing setup refreshingly simple. A published author since 2018, she has two staples that get her into the creative mindset: an unlined notebook and a poetry guidebook that help get inspiration flowing before she writes.

“It’s not a lot of products for writing, you know?” says poet and author Emily Hyland. She jokes, “It’s just like pen and paper. What do you really need?”

And she’s right about the staples being basic, but important. A published author since 2018, with her next collection, BREASTS, expected in 2027, Hyland relies on just two writing essentials to get into a creative headspace: an unlined notebook and a poetry guidebook she plans on rereading soon.

Emily Hyland’s poetry writing staples at a glance:

Unlined notebook for writing: Denik Large Layflat Notebook, $18

Best nonstick everyday frying pan: Viking Hard-Anodized 12-Inch Nonstick Frying Pan, $130
