Why this $10K home sauna was Plant People founder Hudson Davis-Ross’s ultimate wellness splurge

A nearly $10,000 home sauna is a big purchase, but it’s earned a permanent place in Hudson Davis-Ross’s wellness routine. The longtime wellness entrepreneur and Plant People co-founder shares why he’s made it a part of his almost-daily rituals — and why he has zero regrets about the splurge.

“I have a sauna, which I ended up gifting myself with my wife during the holidays,” says Hudson Davis-Ross, a longtime wellness entrepreneur and the co-founder and CEO of Plant People, a doctor-formulated gummy supplement brand rooted in functional mushrooms, adaptogens, and botanicals. “Highly recommend. It’s become part of my daily routine.”

Although a sauna sesh is a relaxing way to recover mentally and physically after a workout or at the end of a long day — and is a popular home practice in other countries like Finland, where there is a sauna for nearly every household — Davis-Ross’ choice to incorporate it into his wellness routine is more personal.

“The reason why I ended up getting it is that I have a history of heart disease in my family,” he says. “I’ve been, unfortunately, in the 90th percentile even though I eat well and work out all the time. Sadly, it’s not ideal. There have been like 40 years of studies that [show] traditional saunas — not infrared, traditional saunas — are impactful for cardiovascular health.”

His own health history makes him especially sensitive to safeguarding his future wellness, too. “Five years in, while [my businesses] were taking off, I ended up having spinal surgery and learning how to walk again,” Davis-Ross says. Looking for natural remedies using mushrooms, herbs, and hemp helped generate the idea for Plant People’s natural, doctor-formulated supplements.

“The ability to make people healthier is just an unbelievable opportunity in the short lives that we have,” he says. “I started getting into health and wellness in my personal life, and I was like, I just want to focus on making people’s lives better, whether it be emotionally, physically, or just general wellness.”

With wellness shaping both his personal and professional life, having a daily routine is important to Davis-Ross, and for him, a home sauna felt like a good investment, given that he planned on using it every day.

“I’m really into products that may not be flashy, but they’re sort of systemic,” he says. “They impact me on a daily basis, and [they’re] something that I use a lot.”

When he’s not traveling on Plant People business, Davis-Ross is serious about his sauna time, using it six days a week for 15 minutes, thermostat set at around 180 degrees — a routine he says he used ChatGPT to help design as a way to help mitigate his potential genetically predisposed health risks. Davis-Ross says that, using previous medical study data about saunas and health benefits, the generative AI calculated that with the optimized sauna ritual in place, he would have a “40% lower risk of all-cause mortality because of that cadence… a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death, a 48% lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease and a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease.

“You’re basically subjecting yourself to hell every night, in a way,” he says about his sauna time. “I mean, I kind of like it, but at some point, after 15 minutes, you’re really done and cooked.”

Despite this, “it’s just a nice experience,” he says. “I’ve been enjoying it. It’s a nice ritual.”

Davis-Ross has placed his sauna just off the back of his home’s primary bathroom, with a stairway going to it. “Basically, I just go out there at night, and then I jump in the shower afterward,” he says.

Using it at night, he says, means “I sleep much better. It’s a nice ritual.”

So far, each cent Davis-Ross has spent on it has been worth it. “I don’t really have anything that I would change, to be honest,” he says. “I’m pretty happy about it. I use it every day. That’s the type of shopper I am.”
