Keep guests comfy with these 5 expert-recommended mattresses

When it comes to finding the best mattress for your guest room, it can be a fine line to walk between comfort and spending a ton of money. After all, you want your houseguests, be they friends or elderly parents, to sleep well, but mattresses are also generally a pretty expensive purchase.

There are plenty of great options out there for guest room mattresses that give friends and family a good night’s sleep without breaking the bank, according to the six sleep experts and mattress testers we talked to.

However, there’s just one word of warning: If you regularly have guests that stay for more than a weekend or have particularly sensitive backs, try to avoid buying a futon.

“Futon mattresses should not be slept on in any regular capacity,” says chiropractor and certified strength and conditioning specialist Matt Tanneberg. “If you’re young and healthy, your body will most likely be ok after sleeping on a futon for a weekend. However, with more nights on a futon mattress, the lack of stability, along with the typical misshapen nature of a futon mattress, their back will not fare well over time.”

FAQ

The ideal guest room mattress is medium to medium-firm, since it’ll suit a wide range of sleep preferences and body types. This type of mattress balances comfort and support so most guests, whether they’re side, back, or combination sleepers, can sleep well without the bed feeling too soft or too firm.

Mattress size depends on room dimensions and how often you host guests.

  • Full or double: Great for smaller guest rooms or solo guests
  • Queen: Most popular choice and roomy enough for two occasional guests
  • King: Best for larger spaces or frequent overnight visitors

Guest room mattresses are typically medium or medium-firm because they offer the broadest appeal. Very soft mattresses might not have enough some sleepers, while very firm ones may feel too rigid. Medium-firm options provide a comfortable balance that works well for most guests.

Yes, hybrid mattresses (made of foam plus coils) are great for guest rooms because they combine comfort and support while being able to accommodate a variety of sleep styles. The coils add durability and airflow, and the foam layers help cushion shoulders and hips.

It’s a fine line between a low price tag (since it’s likely only ever occasionally used) and enough comfort and support so your guests sleep well. Generally speaking, $600 to $1,500 should be enough to find the sweet spot.

A mattress topper can be a smart addition if:

  • You want to soften a firm mattress
  • You want to refresh an older mattress without replacing it

Since it’s not being used all the time, a guest room mattress can last longer than the one in your own room, usually around eight to 12 years. You can get more life out of it by periodically rotating it, too.
