The Kitchen Prep Tools a Registered Dietician Swears By

Prepping your food ahead of time could be the key to making sure you’re eating healthier meals. These kitchen tools, recommended by registered dietitian Leah Murnane, can be used at all points of the cooking process.

Social media is filled with chefs and wellness enthusiasts telling you that meal prepping is the best way to ensure you’re eating healthy foods throughout the week without spending too much time in the kitchen.

Registered dietitian Leah Murnane prefers a different approach: ingredient prepping. Instead of pre-cooking entire meals, you simply prepare different components, like a few chicken breasts and a few servings of rice, and warm everything up when you’re ready to eat.

“I think meal prepping is great, but I am somebody that loves food and I love different tastes,” says Murnane, who’s also a certified specialist in Sports Dietetics. “Sometimes meal prepping can become overexhausting if you're just eating the same thing.”

Warming up the various ingredients may take a little longer than reheating an already made meal, but you’ll still be saving a lot of time by preparing all of the ingredients ahead of time.

“We're tossing everything into a saute pan and then we're moving on, instead of spending an hour cooking it,” she says. “We're warming it up, but we're not necessarily really cooking it. So it takes out that longer process.”

While you may be tempted to get your chicken or veggies perfectly seasoned before putting them in containers, Murnane recommends going a bit basic when first preparing the ingredients and then spicing it up at dinnertime. This allows you to turn a few basic components into multiple meals by simply switching out the seasonings or sauces.

“So now we're having those same ingredients, but that chicken, rice, and broccoli can become a fajita bowl,” Murnane says. “It can also become some type of teriyaki bowl or a barbecue bowl. Same ingredients, different flavors.”

When looking for kitchen tools that can make ingredient prepping easier and quicker, Murnane chooses items that offer versatility, meaning they can be put in the fridge or oven, and are dishwasher safe. Here are some of the top products that she and her husband, a professional chef, keep in their kitchen at all times.
