Ursa Major founder Emily Doyle on what to look for when buying from a B Corp — and her 3 favorite B Corp buys

With nearly 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, Emily Doyle co-founded Ursa Major to create clean, effective, and ethical skincare products customers can trust. As the owner of a B Corp-certified brand, she supports companies that pair quality and performance with a positive impact on people and the planet.

In a world of constant marketing, it’s hard to tell what’s greenwashed and what’s actually sustainable out there, but who better to know what’s what than the founder of a much-loved B Corp skincare brand? Emily Doyle, founder of Ursa Major, shares three products from fellow B Corps that have won a spot in her heart.

As cofounder of Ursa Major, a B Corp skincare brand with a deeply loyal following, Emily Doyle has seen brands come a long way from being sustainable and maybe a little ineffective to being real ingredients powerhouses that still keep the planet (and people) top of mind.

In the not-so-far-away past, “there wasn’t a place where you could find beautiful products that were really good for you that really worked,” she says. “It just felt like there was this huge gap in the space. So that’s sort of what got our wheels turning and eventually started Ursa Major.”

“When you use [clean beauty products] on your skin, you realize how incredible it feels to use an actual clean product that really is in tune with your skin and isn’t just sitting on the surface,” she says. “It isn’t heavy or full of acrylates and synthetics that don’t actually do much for your skin.”

Having built a brand around products that are not only good for you, but ethically and sustainably made, she knows how to look beyond flashy marketing and identify brands that don’t compromise on quality or values. Below, she shares three of her favorite buys from fellow B Corps.

Emily Doyle

Co-founder

After years of living in NYC and working in the beauty industry (before “clean beauty” was a household term), Emily Doyle and her life partner Oliver made the move to beautiful Vermont. It wasn’t long before they were inspired to take everything they knew about big beauty (toxic ingredients, fear-mongering, and more), and flip it all on its head. Their vision: delightfully effective skincare essentials made with forest-found ingredients, by a brand that genuinely wants your skin and your spirit to thrive.

FAQ

For Doyle, trust starts with a product that delivers, but it grows when the company’s choices and values hold up beyond performance.

“I definitely think the products, first and foremost, have to be amazing and work, but I think all these other pieces are building into that trustworthy brand,” she says.

“‘I discovered this brand. I tried the products. I love them. And then when I dug deeper, oh, this brand really speaks to me. I really trust them,’” she says. “The more you peel back the layers, hopefully the more excited and more committed you feel to the brand.”

Absolutely not. “I’m a skincare entrepreneur,” Doyle says. “I want my skin to look great. I want to take care of myself, all the things. But I don’t want to feel like I’m a problem to be fixed by the industry because I’m actually not a problem, and I don’t need to fix myself.”

Doyle and her cofounder built Ursa Major around the belief that clean, thoughtful skincare products should still feel good and deliver real results.

“Ultimately, I think our brand is about products that really feed your skin and your spirit and delighting people with these beautiful, effortless products that really work without mandating that they’re in the bathroom for 45 minutes every morning or doing 10 steps,” she says. “We use beautiful clean actives that really work at active levels, and that’s important.”

B Corp certification verifies a company meets standards for social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. As the cofounder of B Corp-certified Ursa Major, Doyle wants customers to feel confident in both the products and the company they are supporting.

“I think we just want people to feel really great and really proud and like they’re doing something good for themselves and for their skin, and they’re supporting a company that they can feel good about generally as a B Corp and how we manage and run our business and the choices we make,” she says. “I think that’s not necessarily the reason they’re purchasing from us, but it’s a reason to love us even more, you know?”
