Why one of NYC’s most stylish plastic surgeons swears by this normcore sunhat

Dr. Lara Devgan is one of NYC’s top plastic surgeons, and she knows her Chanel lipstick and Ferragamo flags as well as she knows her profession. Here’s why the stylish skinfluencer still swears by this one sunhat for summer days.

If you’ve been feeling the burn of summer’s heat waves on your face, Dr. Lara Devgan feels you. With her 19 years of experience looking after (and at) celeb faces, the top plastic surgeon — known as @laradevganmd on Instagram to more than 1 million followers — is all too aware of how harmful those sun rays can be for your skin. But there’s one thing she swears by to keep you from harm’s way: a large brimmed sunhat.

“I love a large-brim hat,” she says. “As a plastic surgeon, I'm very concerned about sun exposure, and more than 80% of facial aging and skin aging is a result of UV exposure. “The one I really like is on Amazon and it is sort of a wacky looking hat because it has a large brim and it has a face gator that you can pull up so you get complete coverage of the face.”

Protecting your head from UV rays is important, and a sunhat doesn’t just protect your face, it also covers your ears and neck. While there isn’t any “best” kind, the brim should extend at least 2 to 3 inches away from your head and stretch all the way around the crown of the hat.

Although an encapsulating hat like this one, particularly with its neck protection, can go a long way toward protecting delicate skin from harmful rays (and premature aging), the stylish surgeon does admit it has a downside: “The main limitation of a large hat is its fashion limitation,” she says. Still, “I think that it is well worth the cost/benefit analysis.”
