Beauty experts swear by these 9 products for flaky winter scalps

There are a lot of environmental factors that affect our hair, and one of the biggest is the weather and climate we find ourselves in. If your surroundings or the season are drying out your scalp, and with it bestowing some dandruff upon you and your shoulders, it’s probably time to figure out how to get it gone so you can spend your days a little more comfortably.

There’s a plethora of approaches to combating dandruff and dry, flaky scalps, whether you opt for a shampoo, conditioner, treatment, or hair mask. With so many products on the market (and some of them not exactly cheap), it’s overwhelming to know what actually works and what’s worth the price.

To find the best products for combating dry, flaky scalps, we spoke with TK hair stylists who know their stuff.

Why do you get a flaky scalp?

First things first, there are a lot of reasons why you might get a flaky scalp, but it’s particularly weather- and season-dependent.

“Dry scalp is something I see year round in the salon, but it is especially common in the winter,” says Kristina Bynum, owner at Salon Le Volume at Salon Le Volume in Frisco, Texas.

Here’s why Bynum says your scalp gets a little flakier in the winter:

  • Colder temperatures and lack of humidity can strip moisture from the scalp, which is skin just like the face,” says Bynum. “When that moisture barrier is compromised, the scalp can become dry, itchy, tight and flaky.”

  • PH balance. “When clients use shampoos that are too harsh or overly clarifying, it can disrupt the scalp's natural pH,” she says. “Just like facial skin, if you cleanse too aggressively, the scalp reacts either by overproducing oil to compensate or becoming extremely dry and irritated.”

  • “Skipping conditioner or avoiding the scalp with conditioning products can also worsen dryness, especially for those clients with chemically treated hair,” says Bynum.

This last point is “particularly important for clients with bleached or colored hair,” Bynum says. “Blonding and color processes can both make the scalp and hair more vulnerable. This is why gentle moisturizing products are key to maintaining scalp health while also protecting color vibrancy.”

FAQ

Dry scalp is caused by skin dryness, often resulting in small, fine flakes and itchiness. Dandruff is typically driven by excess oil, yeast overgrowth (like Malassezia), or inflammation, leading to larger, greasy flakes and persistent itching. These may overlap, but effective treatments differ based on the underlying cause.

For dry scalp, look for gentle, hydrating, anti-itch, and barrier-supporting ingredients such as:

  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin for moisture
  • Ceramides and plant oils to reinforce the scalp barrier
  • Aloe vera or colloidal oatmeal for soothing irritation

These ingredients help restore scalp hydration and calm inflammation without stripping natural oils.

It depends on what’s going on with your scalp.

  • Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners are best for dry scalp with tight, itchy skin and fine flakes.
  • Medicated dandruff shampoos work better for persistent flaking, scaling, or grease-associated dandruff.

If your symptoms are mixed, rotate between a moisturizing daily shampoo and a targeted medicated treatment as needed.

Many with dry or sensitive scalps find that sulfates and strong fragrances can aggravate irritation. Choosing sulfate-free, fragrance-free formulations minimizes the risk of further dryness or flare-ups, especially with frequent shampooing.

Medicated dandruff shampoos can sometimes dry hair or leave it looking dull if used too often. To reduce risk:

  • Follow with a hydrating conditioner
  • Use dandruff shampoo only as needed
  • Avoid daily use of strong medicated formulas unless directed
