Derm Carmen Castilla knows skincare. Here’s her best advice for using retinol, no matter your age

Retinol isn’t a one-size-fit-fall situation, especially as skin changes with age, requiring different care needs along with it. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Carmen Castilla breaks down the best retinol options based on your age, including some of the best retinols for sensitive skin.

“Dermatology as a field has been evolving so rapidly over the past probably seven years with so many new medications, so many new treatments for medical conditions,” says Dr. Carmen Castilla, board-certified dermatologist at New York Dermatology Group. “But also on the cosmetic end of things, we have so many advances in that, so it’s like a constantly changing field, which keeps it exciting and interesting.”

With a decade of experience in the field surrounded by constant change, Castilla has grounded herself in one simple point. “The more I can understand what matters to a patient, and the more I can help them achieve their results in a way that's meaningful to them. Because that's different for everyone. At the end of the day, personalized medicine is about listening.”

When it comes to finding skincare essentials that really make a difference, it’s best to turn to someone who understands the importance of personalized care and knows your specific skin needs should always lead the way.

“There’s kind of staples at every age, right?” says Castilla. “You want a sunscreen at every age, and you want some sort of retinoid or retinol at every age. The retinol also, you may want to change the strength as you age, because your skin barrier changes as well.”

Dr. Carmen Castilla’s retinol picks as skin ages at a glance:

Best starter retinol cream for your 20s and 30s: Avène Retrinal 0.05% Multi-Corrective Cream, $50

Best starter retinol cream for your 20s and 30s: Avène Retrinal 0.1% Intensive Multi-Corrective Cream, $68

Dr. Carmen Castilla’s tips for using retinol

“You need to use it at night,” says Castilla. “That’s when your skin’s renewing itself. That’s, you know, increased blood to your skin, increased growth factors. And so the retinol there is more effective at night.”

“When you’re using a retinol, you want to try not to exfoliate before because it increases the penetration of your retinol, can increase burn, and it can cause more irritation,” Castilla says.

Castilla says, “you don’t want to try to use a glycolic cleanser, especially when you’re trying to introduce it first. No glycolic cleanser, no sal acid cleanser because it’s going to take away the dead skin cells at the very top of the skin, allow it to penetrate more, and it can cause more reactions.”

“The other thing that you want to make sure is that your skin is really, really dry before you put it on, because when your skin barrier is wet, it allows for more penetration of products as well and that can cause more irritation,” she says.

“The amount that you’re using is important,” Castilla says. “The recommendation is a pea-sized amount. So you kind of like put a small amount on your finger, dot it on your face, spread it around. If you overuse your retinoid, you are going to start to peel at some point. It may not happen right away.”

“If you do start to peel, it’s not a big deal,” she says. “You just stop the retinoid for a few days or retinol for a few days. Just use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, wait for it to subside, and then reintroduce it slowly.”
