“Look, I'm waking up. I've slept on my sweat and drool and my retinol and my skincare all night,” says Hurly. “First thing I want to do is wash my face, but then I'm also going to work out in the morning. So I'm also going to wash my face again, whether that's at the gym or at home. Then on a particularly sweaty day, which is half of the year, I'm going to probably wash my face again in the evening. And then I'm going to wash it again before bed.

“Sometimes I wash my face probably four times a day. I don’t even think that’s egregious, but I want a product that feels really gentle. I know the enzymes are supposed to be exfoliating, but I want those to be the exfoliant. I don’t want gritty, physical exfoliators. This is the one that finally converted me, and I use it every morning.” 

Plus, Hurly says, “it’s TSA-friendly and a little goes a long way: I have two bottles of this, and I’ve been using it probably for like four or five months every day and I think I still have half of it left.”

“An interesting one that is maybe not in my toiletry kit to start, but that makes its way in on many trips, is the Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel,” says Hurly. “Whether you're oily, super dry, any of that, there’s something in the line that will fit your skin. 

“If you forget to bring something or you find your skin's too dry or you're reacting to something, just get yourself to a pharmacy in Europe or a drugstore in the US and find the Neutrogena Hydra Boost that fits your skin type because it’s hydrating, especially for flying. 

“I've flown before and I've put really expensive creams on that have all these fragrances and stuff, and then I arrive thinking like my skin's going to be so luxe and plush, but then like my skin is just red and irritated because there was like too much in that product. This to me it's like it's everything it needs to be, and it doesn't go overboard, and it's probably like under $10.”

“I do think you need SPF every single day, and so to pare down your products, make make sure your daytime moisturizer has SPF in it,” says Hurly. “Cardon’s is petite, but a little goes such a long way with this. Like this little thing that fits in my palm will last me six weeks of daily use.

Something Hurly pays close attention to is the texture of a product, and this one delivers for lightweight daily wear. 

“The founder is Korean, but she lives in the US now and so she's bringing a lot of what she grew up with and her understanding of that market. When you’ve had the experience of wearing sunscreens from Korea or Japan, you feel like the SPF feels elegant on your skin. It really feels like an elegantly worn sunscreen.” 

Plus, “it blends in cleanly. It blends into your beard really easily and doesn’t leave anything behind. And it fits in your pocket and it fits in a dopp kit really easily. So yeah, it's the best.”

As someone with body odor, I’m a lover of antiperspirant, and I always have a stick,” Hurly says. “My go-to is the Dove Men+Care Clean Comfort Antiperspirant Stick. Their regular ones go up to 72 hours of protection and they advertise that their maximum protection formulas go up to 96 hours. But around hour 36, I’m probably stinking regardless of the advertised function. 

“To me, Dove has the money that they can guarantee their products won’t stain your clothes or transfer to your bed sheets. My bed sheets are blue; I use this antiperspirant every day, and I don’t wake up with white stains. To me, it’s everything I need in a functional product. The stick is spill-proof, obviously, so it travels easily.

“I love the spray, but it doesn’t always travel well in a carry-on. But I’ll apply it before a long-haul flight so I’m not sweating at all. I’ll put it on the backs of my thighs, my armpits, and on my back. I’ll put it anywhere on my body that I don’t want to sweat for the next 24 hours.”

“Arquiste has these bulb-shaped bottles similar to a grenade, and the Chiquitos line is the shrunken-down versions that are 30 milliliters,” Hurly says. “I would say you should get the chiquitos in Arquiste's A Grove by the Sea or Arquiste's Sydney Rock Pool. Those are some of the single most universal fragrances you’ll ever encounter. 

“They both smell fresh, uplifting, and they will put some pep in your step if you’re jet-lagged or even hungover, going to a meeting, need to impress, or just need to feel great all day. They’re both just incredible options.”
