FAQ

For children, dermatologists generally recommend broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. This level provides effective protection against both UVA and UVB rays without being overly harsh. Higher SPFs can be used, but application and reapplying matter more than the number.

Mineral sunscreen is often recommended for kids because it uses zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. They’re less likely to cause stinging or irritation.

When choosing SPF for kids, it’s best to avoid:

  • Added fragrance
  • Alcohol or harsh preservatives
  • Sunscreens not labeled for children or sensitive skin

Look for formulas that are fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist- or pediatrician-tested.

For babies under 6 months, a strategy of sun avoidance using shade, hats, and protective clothing is recommended first. For older babies and toddlers, mineral sunscreen formulated for babies or kids is generally considered safe.

Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, and immediately after swimming, sweating, or drying off. (Even water-resistant sunscreens lose effectiveness over time!)

Since kids tend to sweat, swim, and play in sunny weather, having them use water-resistant sunscreen is a huge plus. Look for water resistance of either 40 or 80 minutes, and always reapply after water exposure.

Some kids can tolerate adult sunscreen, but sunscreens specifically formulated for children are usually gentler and better suited to sensitive skin. They’re designed to minimize irritation and can be easier to apply and reapply.
