YouTube’s sun-protection-loving @DermAngelo shares his 3 go-tos for dry summer skin

Summer heat, beach days, and nonstop air conditioning can all leave your skin crying out for some much needed hydration. Dr. Angelo Landriscina, known as @DermAngelo to more than 1.5 million followers across YouTube and Instagram, shares the cleanser, serum, and moisturizer he layers when dry summer skin needs help holding on to water.

With summer’s dry heat at its peak, long weekends spent outdoors, and beach days during vacations, skin might need a little extra love (read: moisture) around this time of year. You know how your plants look a little wilted without a little extra water right now? That’s kind of like your skin.

The heat has a way of sucking up all the moisture from your skin, and when it comes to keeping it properly hydrated, Dr. Angelo Landriscina knows what to do. He shares his advice and experience with not just the patients he sees as a board-certified dermatologist at the Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan, but also as @DermAngelo on YouTube and Instagram, where he has more than 1.5 million followers. Landriscina also has a special interest in sun protection not just as a concerned derm but as founder of sun-protection-focused clothing line SOUL-A

For summer, Landriscina knows skin needs more than just SPF coverage with (regularly applied!) sun cream and protective clothing. It needs a little bonus help morning and night to help it recover, too.

His lifesavers? An easy, accessible trio of go-to products that fall naturally into a basic routine: cleanser, serum, and moisturizer.

“I’ve been doing dermatology since 2017,” Landriscina says. “Right now I do mostly cosmetic dermatology, but I also do medical derm, have kind of a varied background, do research, do a lot of social media work, and I have a sun protective clothing line.”

FAQ: Skincare tips for summer

According to Dr. Angelo Landriscina, a board-certified dermatologist, dry skin calls for a layered approach: start with a hydrating cleanser, then a serum with hyaluronic acid that can sink deep into your skin, and a lightweight moisturizer to help seal it all in.

Skin dryness can happen when it’s hot and humid outside. Sun exposure, frequent cleansing, sweat, and time spent in air conditioning can all leave skin feeling tight and dehydrated. That’s why a summer skincare routine may still need a little extra hydration in a few (or every!) product in your routine depending on your personal needs.

A smart summer dryness routine starts with hydration at every step: a cleanser that doesn’t leave skin feeling stripped, a serum that helps attract water to the skin, and a lightweight moisturizer that helps lock everything in. The goal is to hydrate without using products that are too heavy or have trouble absorbing. Otherwise, you’ll just be adding to your discomfort in the heat!

Landriscina notes his “routine changes all the time” but when it comes to tackling certain concerns like dryness, he sticks with what works for the situation. For a simple dry skin routine, apply products from lightest to heaviest after cleansing.

“It would be cleanser, serum, and then moisturizer. But if you did all three of those together, I would say that’s super hydrating,” he says. “If you want to hold on to as much water as possible, that’s the way to do it.”
