If your skincare routine already feels one step away from needing a flowchart, dermatologist Dr. Angelo Landriscina gets it. Known as @DermAngelo to his combined 1.5 million-plus YouTube and Instagram followers, he still swears by one SPF and one SPF only, despite all the products he’s tried.
The reason? It’s a multitasking superstar that combines moisturizer, SPF 50, and a vitamin C serum in one affordable product.
If you’re at all into skincare, there’s a good chance you’ll recognize board-certified dermatologist Dr. Angelo Landriscina from YouTube and Instagram, where he dishes out skincare advice as @DermAngelo to more than 1.5 million followers.
One recurring topic? Sunscreen, sun scream, and SPF. No matter what you call it, Landriscina is big into sun protection. (In fact, he’s so into sun protection that he founded SOUL-A, a brand that makes sun-protective clothing and accessories.)
Landriscina has tried “hundreds” of sunscreens, but for him, there’s just one go-to. It’s the only sunscreen he’s found that multitasks effectively — cutting one step from your routine in the mornings — and still feels elegant on the skin.
“I love a good sunscreen that doubles as a moisturizer — even though technically all sunscreens are kind of moisturizers — but Naturium Dew-Glow Moisturizer SPF 50 is sort of everything you need in one,” Landriscina says. “They've included a vitamin C derivative in there, as well as niacinamide; you also have some antioxidant protection.”
One thing that’ll keep you wearing sunscreen on a daily basis is how good it feels on, or what skincare people call “elegant.”
“I think it's pretty cosmetically elegant…but I would say the downside here is that people with more oily skin may not love it,” says Landriscina. It comes down to the SPF’s “cream-like” consistency, which he says is more suited for people with medium to dry skin.
“Any multifunctional product that could be moisturizer, sunscreen, and vitamin C serum in one makes things easier,” he says. “For me, I just rinse my face with water in the morningl and then I can put on this.
“The key to good skincare is consistency, and part of the key to consistency is simplifying. That’s it. It's like a two-step, one-product routine.”
How to choose and apply SPF, according to a derm
- Finding the right sun protection factor (SPF): “Everything that you've heard about like, oh, don't go above SPF 30 is false,” says Landriscina. “We know in real-life situations, especially when people are outdoors for longer, they're more likely to burn with lower SPF. So, I do a [factor] 50 on a daily basis.”
- Application is key — and lots of people get it wrong. One of the things he loves about Naturium’s Dew-Glow SPF is that it helps people know exactly how much to apply. “One of the cool things about it is people generally don't know how much sunscreen to apply to their face,” he says. “This sunscreen actually has a depression in the cap that you fill that is supposed to be the correct dose for the face. So, it kind of takes the guesswork out of it, too.”
- Where to apply SPF daily: “I apply sunscreen to all other exposed areas every day,” says Landriscina. “With a product like this, I would do my neck; my face; if any of my upper chest is showing, depending on the shirt — like if I have a V-neck on, I'll apply there. And I never forget my ears, too.”
- How often to reapply SPF: Dr. Landriscina says to reapply every two hours.
