A Sports Dietitian Uses This Water Bottle and Running Vest to Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is critical to every part of health and performance. A sports dietetics specialist and former field hockey player shares the water bottle and running vest she uses to make sure she’s getting enough water.

Proper hydration is vital for everyone, regardless if you’re an athlete or someone with an office job. And while you’ve likely been subjected to countless electrolyte ads on social media and TV, certified sports dietetics specialist Leah Murnane says most people only need plain water.

“The average person that's like sitting on the couch, you definitely don't need to be drinking an electrolyte beverage,” says Murnane, herself a former athlete and NCAA Division I field hockey player. “If you're drinking the electrolytes and you're drinking the ones that have like 1,000 milligrams of sodium in them and you're not doing any type of activity, you're not really losing all that sweat or the salt in the sweat, and you're probably not consuming enough regular water.”

With that said, there may be times when you’re unable to get fresh water or you may need to ensure you have a good amount before going on a long run or hike. If you’re looking for something that can keep you hydrated for long periods of time, here are Murnane’s two favorite products that she uses to ensure she’s getting enough H20.

These products come with the added benefit of reducing your exposure to microplastics, which can sometimes be found in bottled water.

“I don't want to get on the [microplastics] soapbox, but it is nice to have a product that doesn't have plastic anywhere on it,” Murnane says.
