7 sleep experts recommend the best firm mattresses

There’s lots of talk about ultra-plush, “sink-into-it” mattresses, but there’s still a fair few reasons why people prefer the support and stability of a firm mattress. Typically made with innerspring coils, these mattresses give sleepers more pressure relief at night, helping to alleviate chronic back pain for a more rested wakeup.

Tips for buying a firm mattress

When it comes to shopping for a firm mattress, chiropractor and certified strength and conditioning specialist Matt Tanneberg has a pro tip.

“Err on the side of more firm than more soft,” he says. “I typically recommend people find a mattress as firm as they can handle because it will help to support them, and with time, it will start to get comfier as it gets worn in. If you start too soft, over time it will get softer and softer too quickly, which can lead to pain and issues.”

FAQ

A firm mattress typically rates from a seven to a nine out of 10 on the firmness scale. It’ll offer sleepers minimal sink, strong support, and a flatter sleep surface. They’re more about keeping the spine aligned than a cushy feeling of having the mattress contour around your body.

No matter your sleeping position (or if you just don’t love a “sinking-in” feeling when you get into bed, you can find a firm mattress that’s right for you. Back sleepers who need spinal support; stomach sleepers who want to prevent hip sink, and heavier sleepers who need more support all can benefit from having a firm mattress.

A firm mattress can help with back pain if it keeps the spine properly aligned. Some sleepers who deal with lower-back pain prefer firm or medium-firm mattresses, since they won’t sag as much. Too firm, however, and you could find pressure points worsen the problem. However, overly firm mattresses may worsen pressure points for some sleepers.

Firm mattresses can be uncomfortable for side sleepers if they don’t allow enough pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. If you’re a side sleeper but want a firm mattress, look for ones with a cushioned comfort layer or zoned support to balance firmness and pressure relief.

Firm mattresses have more resistance and don’t contour as much around your body as you sleep. Medium-firm mattresses will be a little cushier, which is good for combination sleepers.

You’ll want to look at the construction of the mattress as a starting point. You’ll get firm versions of mattresses from any of the following:

  • Innerspring mattresses with thinner comfort layers
  • Hybrid mattresses that have firm foam and strong coil systems
  • Latex mattresses, which will feel firm but responsive.

A mattress might be too firm for you if you experience pressure-point pain, numbness, or find yourself tossing and turning.
