Sending your child off to school for the semester can be an exciting, stressful, action-packed, and often emotional experience, whether it’s their very first move-in day to their first semester of senior year. Dorm Room Mamas Amber and Elise have truly seen it all, between their experiences with their own children to working with families to prepare.

They’ve built a massively successful Facebook group that is 440.3k followers strong of people seeking out their expertise on how to best set up their student for the school year ahead, while creating a “home away from home” for them. Move-in day, visits, or even care packages all require thoughtful preparation. Here are the things the experts themselves deem to be an A+ based on their own experience with them.

Advice from Dorm Room Mamas

It’s a lot to tackle, planning and executing a successful move-in, visit, and semester ahead, as you want to set your child up to succeed with the school year ahead.

Amber’s advice points to early preparation to save your sanity later on.

“Start planning early. When they start their senior year, start buying. Buy one item every month until you get to summer and have to do the panic buying. But, at least you already have a lot of things. We both have lists of, these are things that are safe to buy ahead of time. You can't necessarily buy the fridge or the microwave. Every school has different requirements for that.

You can't necessarily even buy the sheets ahead of time because not all of them use twin XL. So we do have, you can buy the shower caddy, things like that.”

Elise recommends taking a breather.

“I would say my one piece of advice would be to pack your patience above everything else and definitely give yourself and your child a lot of grace on move-in day. It's tough for everyone, it's stressful, and you know, you're dealing with them leaving and their whole life is changing. So just give them grace, give yourself grace, and just be patient.”

I’m the founder of Dorm Luv, an interior design firm specializing in making small spaces feel beautiful, functional, and comfortable.

I founded Dorm Luv in 2022, after my eldest headed off to college and I found myself with a little more time to pursue my passion. Interior design has always been something I’ve loved, so designing his dorm room came naturally and quickly turned into something much bigger. In 2023, I joined Dorm Room Mamas and soon became friends with Amber. I knew right away that Dorm Luv could be an asset to the group, and what started as a friendship has grown into an incredible partnership.

Today, Amber and I work together on every aspect of the group. We bring different strengths, a shared passion, and a whole lot of fun to what we do—and we truly make a great team!
